(Written for a dVersePoets prompt to imagine a conversation with a famous person.)
It’s very kind of you, General Jackson
To ask me to tea.
The memories the Hermitage must hold.
Please share some with me.
Rachel, of course, your dear beloved wife
Such rumors did fly
About the circumstances of your vows
Taken on the sly.
I’ve read of the slander spread by your foes.
Successfully implemented by those
Who helped spread it back.
Your victory battle at New Orleans
A high point indeed.
Regrettably tainted by arrogance.
That’s the way you lead.
Though I do support your common-man views
I doubt I can vote
For you, as your lack of experience
Makes success remote.
Thank you for taking the time to explain.
I’ll think long and hard
Of your bravery, honor and respect
As I mark my card.
