As Googlism yielded a “sorry, Google doesn’t know v.b. holmes” message, this poem is composed of random statements which came up on Googlism for James Daunt, the name of an early 19th-century character in my novel. There are a number of James Daunts online so I don’t know who these comments describe nor do I know who wrote them. The subject of my exercise is the fictional James Daunt and it was written as a fun response to Sam Peralta’s challenge to write list poetry using Googlism.

ha. i def like that first part, a bibli0phile but not an open book…must be nice to be calm always too…cool you did a character from your book…so would you say this describes him at all…?
It is what he is developing into–I tried to Googlize my name, and several other names, without success. In the end, I liked the descriptions for James Daunt.

Loved this – the short choppy lines really work, and I like the fact that it is a composite, almost like a cento.

This is exactly the kind of poem I expected to see from the list poem challenge – taking the raw footage from Googlism, so to speak, and then editing, splicing, and re-editing the footage into a cinematic whole. A great segue into into your novel, too. Well done!

Sam Peralta posted a piece on http://dversepoets.com/ in which he suggested using random comments from googlism.com to compose a poem. It’s a fun exercise–give it a try.
I have actually tried it. It’s called: Flarf-poetry. Go read my recent flarf-poem. you will laugh. 🙂
