“[the fictional] james daunt is her latest subject” (googlism)

james daunt
is clearly
a huge
bibliophile
but
as
has already
been intimated…
james daunt
is not
an open book.

james daunt
is neither
stupid
nor
suicidal;
james daunt
is
remarkably
calm.

james daunt
is keen.
james daunt
is fast
proving…
James Daunt
is on
the right track

(Written for dVersePoets, FormForAll. November 7, 2013.)

As Googlism yielded a “sorry, Google doesn’t know v.b. holmes” message, this poem is composed of random statements which came up on Googlism for James Daunt, the name of an early 19th-century character in my novel. There are a number of James Daunts online so I don’t know who these comments describe nor do I know who wrote them. The subject of my exercise is the fictional James Daunt and it was written as a fun response to Sam Peralta’s challenge to write list poetry using Googlism.

Nice job, VB; certainly makes us curious about Jim Daunt & your novel in progress. I am, as you have guessed, making a poetic movie out of my character, Roderick Buck, from my unpublished novel BLACKTHORNE.

  2. brian miller says:

ha. i def like that first part, a bibli0phile but not an open book…must be nice to be calm always too…cool you did a character from your book…so would you say this describes him at all…?

    • vbholmes says:

It is what he is developing into–I tried to Googlize my name, and several other names, without success. In the end, I liked the descriptions for James Daunt.

  3. Grace says:

What a character you painted ~ I specially like that he is not an open book ~

  4. Mary says:

How very clever!! Now I wonder about the composite James Daunt who seems so very fascinating after reading the various phrases!

  5. Very nice! James Daunt seems like quite the character. 🙂

  6. Loved this – the short choppy lines really work, and I like the fact that it is a composite, almost like a cento.

  7. I guess he’s not daunting then. 🙂

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend.

  8. Ah.. I think this is on the right track — just like James

  9. This is exactly the kind of poem I expected to see from the list poem challenge – taking the raw footage from Googlism, so to speak, and then editing, splicing, and re-editing the footage into a cinematic whole. A great segue into into your novel, too. Well done!

  10. Very creative and I love this poem so much.

    Brilliant!
